Can Cats Smell Human Farts?

June 12, 2022 by Sammy Leave a Comment

Farting or flatulence is a natural condition in which an animal releases gas generated in the stomach or intestines. This condition is quite common in humans. Gas can be found throughout our digestive tract, including the stomach, colon, rectum and small intestine. We fart because of the buildup of this gas in our body, usually due to swallowed air.

If you are a cat owner, you may have farted many times in front of your little furball. So, it’s rational to wonder, can cats smell human farts?

Yes, cats can smell a human’s fart. In fact, your feline has more scent receptors compared to humans. So, he/she will detect a fart faster than us. When it comes to liking and disliking, the answer completely depends upon a cat. As no two cats are the same, one cat can like the smell of a fart, while the other will run away as fast as possible.

Cat’s Sense of Smell

Cats have an impressive sense of smell. According to studies, your little furball has 14 times better sense of smell than humans. Due to this very reason, cats use their scent to mark their territory. They will rub their face on different objects and spots to leave their scent glands.

A strong sense of smell is not always a good thing. Due to this trait, your feline can get quite upset if it detects any unfamiliar scents.

Can Cats Smell Farts?

Generally speaking, a cat’s nose is created to find mice and other animals. So, if your gas does not smell like mice, your little furball will simply ignore the scent. However, there are several other factors that can upset your feline.

For instance, cats don’t like loud noises. So, if your feline was sleeping and you have ripped out a loud sound, your feline will wake up and get upset.

Can Cats Detect My Illnesses?

As mentioned earlier, cats have an exceptional sense of smell. This sense can help them find if you are ill or suffering from a certain disorder. They do this by detecting hormones changes or smelling the foul scent of cell decomposing.

Do Cats Fart?

All animals, including cats, can fart due to their digestive tract. Just like humans, gas buildup in your feline’s stomach can lead to flatulence. There are several causes that can lead to this condition, such as:

  • The fiber content in the diet
  • Dairy products
  • Allergies
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Intestinal diseases

Symptoms

In cats, flatulence is not always harmless. Here are some of the most common symptoms that your cat can face due to the gas buildup:

  • Decreases appetite
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Irregular bowel movement
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
