Durian – What You Need to Know

Durian is a fruit of numerous tree specialities. To this date, there are more than 30 recognized Durio species available only in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. Out of these 30 species, around nine produce edible durian fruit.

In Thailand and Malaysia, durian fruit is so popular that it has more than 300 and 100 names, respectively. In some regions, this fruit is also known as the “King of Fruits” due to its thorn-covered rind, strong odor and large size.

Can Cats Eat Durian Fruit?

Durian fruit has hundreds of health benefits for humans. However, when it comes to cats, this fruit is surely not an excellent addition to their diet. This is because durian is loaded with carbs and calories. So, if you offer too many durian fruits to your little friend, it can lead to obesity and other weight-related problems.

Furthermore, Durian is a fruit while your cat is a carnivore. So, even though durian is loaded with nutrients, it does not offer any health benefits to your little feline.

Is Durian Toxic for Cats?

Did you know your cat’s sense of smell is 14 times stronger than yours?

When it comes to taste, durian is surely not toxic for your little friend. However, this fruit can lead to gagging and other health complications due to its foul smell. Durian is not an ideal fruit for your feline for two main reasons:

  1. They have a strong odor that your little friend cannot tolerate. Their foul smell can cause several health problems to your cats, such as gagging, vomiting and even diarrhea.
  2. Durian fruits are loaded with sugar content. So, if you offer too many of these fruits to your friend, they can cause an upset stomach and weight-related problems.

Better Alternative to Durian Fruit

We don’t recommend offering your feline durian because it does more harm than good. Your cat does not get any health benefits from this fruit. Plus, they might end up with a severe case of vomiting and diarrhea.

Therefore, you should stick with healthier fruits, such as:

  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Apples

Conclusion

If you are wondering, can cats eat durian? Then the answer is, technically YES, but ultimately, NO. Durian fruit does not offer any health benefits. Instead, due to its foul smell, this food can cause severe gagging, vomiting and even diarrhea in cat
